Regardless of whether you believe you were born with your best talents or you think you developed them by putting in hours of practice, you can use your skills and talents to start a business. In fact, many others before you have done the same.

In his book Outliers, author Malcolm Gladwell asserts that the way to achieve world-class excellence in any field is by putting in 10,000 hours of practice. For example, a child who is introduced to the violin as a toddler and is then encouraged to practice regularly throughout childhood and adolescence can accumulate many hours of practice on the violin. That person might even become proficient enough on that instrument so that people consider her or him to be talented as a violinist.

Gladwell’s book leaves us with a question: Are people born with the talents they end up with as adults? Or do we develop certain skills by practicing them until we think of those skills as our talents?

Wherever you think your talents come from, what are your best talents? In this article, we explore ways in which you can use whatever it is you’re good at doing to start a business.

Develop an Online Course

Is there a topic about which you are absolutely passionate? Or do you have a skill you can teach to others online?

Then why not develop an online course? There are several reliable platforms that will help you post your courses online. Some of these are Udemy, Teachable, and Educadium. There are others, as well. The best of them make it easy to invoice your students and market your courses, too.

To get started, make a list of the talents and skills you most enjoy using. Then consider developing one or more of the following courses:

  • Teach a language
  • Tutor college students
  • Start a YouTube channel to teach people about healthy living
  • Become an adviser for new businesses
  • Teach people how to calculate and file their taxes

Of course, there are many other topics you can consider as well, depending on your experience, your skills, and your talents.

Flip Houses

Flipping a house involves lots of hard physical labor, but if you are handy with a set of tools, this could be a good way for you to make some money.

To get started, review the real estate market near you and get to know it really well. Develop an eye for picking out homes that just need a little love in order to bring you some profit. Also look into your options for financing your house-flipping projects.

Then, once you have purchased your first fixer-upper, put your talents to work in making that house a dream home for your future buyer.

Write E-Books

If your talents lie in the domain of the written word, writing e-books could open up a business opportunity for you. What’s more, you could even publish your e-books yourself on platforms such as Smashwords or Amazon.
